Kick-start of joint collaborative Wave Energy R&D in FP7
The participation in European Projects has become a common activity for SMEs (small-and medium-sized enterprises), R&D Institutes and Universities involved in scientific activities and technology development. The involvement in such research projects often brings along added value for the development of new products and services and improvement of existing ones. The Framework Programmes (FPs) are the financial tools of the European Union aiming to support research and development activities since 1984. FP7 is now running from the period 2007 to 2013, and projects on wave energy have already started. Read more

Installation of the Wave Hub planned for Spring 2010

South West RDA announced that the installation of the Wave Hub off the coast of Cornwall in South West England will be delayed until spring 2010, one year later than expected. This announcement was made in April of 2008. Read more
Scotland 5 ROC, anyone raise?

In one more step to promote the take-off of its marine renewable industry Scotland has recently announced that it wishes to implement banded levels of finance for marine developments. Consultation on changes to the Renewables Obligation ( Scotland ) revealed plans to provide five Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for wave energy devices and three for tidal devices for each Megawatt of power produced. EMEC Developments in Monitoring for Wave and Tidal Energy Devices

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), based at Stromness in Orkney, was established in 2003 as a test centre for both wave and tidal energy devices. It was established primarily as an operational facility, and consequently it was not financed for research or for the development of monitoring techniques. Read more

Portugal : a rising marketplace for wave energy?

Portugal has a vast extension of maritime territory covering more than 1.700.000 km2, corresponding to one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of the European Continent. This fact, together with a good wave energy resource and the large energy dependency of the country may be the major drivers for the dedication of Portuguese scientist to wave energy exploitation studies for more than three decades. Interview

“HOW TO RAISE MONEY”

Interview with Nicolai S. Løvdal

1 - In your opinion, what are the main barriers to overcome in order to be able to raise money in this business;

The main barrier to raise money in every business is to build a business case the investors believe in. To simplify this a bit a good business case consists of a winning team and good business idea. The construction of a good team is often more important than the business idea.

2 - How do you see that wave energy, as a young player in the energy market, could raise sufficient funds in its current pre-commercial stage?

First of all I hope to see that the companies that already have raised funding will get out some full scale projects within reasonable time to exploit the support mechanisms which are already established. In particular I'm thinking of the £50m demonstration fund in UK and the feed-in tariff for the Portuguese Pilot Zone. Read more
